Cognitive Dissonance
The mental discomfort experienced when holding conflicting beliefs, values, or behaviors — and the strategies the mind uses to resolve it.
Cognitive dissonance is a foundational concept in social psychology, first described by Leon Festinger in 1957. It describes the tension that arises when a person holds two or more cognitions (beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors) that are psychologically inconsistent. To reduce this discomfort, individuals may change beliefs, justify behavior, avoid contradictory information, or minimize the importance of the conflict.
